Just outside Meiringen the river Aare has carved a limestone gorge nearly 1.4 kilometres long and up to 200 metres deep — secured walkways and tunnels thread its entire length.
Walking the gorge
The Aareschlucht runs between Meiringen and Innertkirchen. Walkways bolted to the rock and short tunnels follow the turquoise water to where the ravine narrows to barely a metre across, the cliffs rising sheer overhead. The full length takes around an hour at an easy pace.
Getting there & entrances
There are two entrances — Aareschlucht West on the Meiringen side and Aareschlucht Ost near Innertkirchen — so you can walk through and ride the bus back, or return the way you came. A small entrance fee applies. It is an easy trip from the flat on foot, by bike, by a short bus ride, or by car.
Making a half-day of it
The gorge pairs naturally with the Reichenbach Falls: two of the valley's signature sights within a short distance of each other and of the flat. Bring a light layer — inside the ravine it stays cool even on hot days.

Is the Aare Gorge suitable for children?
Yes — it follows secured walkways and is a favourite with families. There are some steps and the path can be damp, so hold small children's hands and wear shoes with grip.
When is the Aare Gorge open?
The gorge is generally open from around April to October, with occasional special winter openings. Check current dates before you set out, as the season depends on conditions.
